Nashville’s streets are about to get a lot more colorful. This Pride month, the city will be painting its first permanent rainbow crosswalk. The new addition will cover the East Nashville intersection home to the Lipstick Lounge, the city’s only lesbian bar.
The bar’s co-owner, Christa Suppan, told WPLN News she’s honored to be a part of it.
“I’m so freaking excited. That’s going to be so beautiful,” Suppan said. “To be the location of it is exciting (and) a bit nerve wracking. Because it does scare me just a smidge that people are going to come ruin it and be jerks. I know it won’t be from within this community or this neighborhood. I’m just hoping we can keep it beautiful.”
Members of the community are invited to stop by 14th and Woodland St. Saturday, June 29 at 9 a.m. to help paint the crosswalk alongside members of the Metro Council LGBTQ Caucus and local, queer advocacy groups.
Caucus Chair Emily Benedict, who represents the East Nashville neighborhood, said that her caucus has been working on the project for the past few months in collaboration with Nashville’s department of transportation.
“It is historic for our city in one of our most historic locations, outside one of the most iconic lesbian-owned establishments in the country,” Benedict said.
Benedict was also a part of a groundbreaking event at Lipstick Lounge last month, as construction began on Chapstick, an upcoming bar dedicated to women’s sports.
