A shooting injured a Nashville police detective Thursday, and the man suspected of opening fire later died from shots fired by officers.
The incident happened in a Donelson neighborhood, not far from the airport. It began around 2:30 p.m. as a police response to The Parking Spot, a lot used by air travelers.
Body camera footage from Det. Donovan Coble shows he chased the man for about 30 seconds, yelling commands and threatening to use a Taser. The detective then yells, “drop that gun!” before firing multiple shots and wounding the man, who fell into a brushy area.
The detective was hit in his ribs and immediately left the scene to find help. Police say he is in critical but stable condition.
City police say an hour passed before the man was found in the overgrown area, a few feet from where he first fell. They’ve not detailed their search tactics, but tell WPLN News there was no negotiation before SWAT Officer Tim Brewer came across the man, “perceived a gunshot and fired.”
Footage shows him firing before multiple times before officers move in to arrest the man.
Police identified 37-year-old Delama Casimir as the person who fired on officers before being killed. He was carrying a Florida ID.
