Nashville police say a 20-year-old is in stable condition after he was shot Monday afternoon by an officer in Goodlettsville.
Police say the encounter began when School Resource Officer Byron Boelter encountered a two-car crash on his way home from work. Body camera footage shows the officer checking on one of the vehicles and telling the occupants to leave their stuff inside the car.
Then, a young man reaches for a gun on the dashboard. The officer fires and strikes him in the leg. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Metro Nashville Community Oversight are both investigating the incident.
The department has placed Boelter on administrative assignment. He’s been with the police force for 16 years and works at Hunters Lane High School.
This is the ninth shooting this year by Metro police, including six that have been fatal. Two people have also killed themselves during encounters with officers.
