Bucking the national trend favoring democrats, Tennessee Republicans gained control of both the state House and Senate for the first time in more than 140 years.
Republicans have effectively controlled the State Senate since the 2006 elections and now they control the lower chamber too. House Minority Leader, Republican Jason Mumpower, says Barack Obama’s double-digit loss here hurt state democrats.
“The election in Tennessee was a repudiation of Barack Obama and the values he holds dear.”
Democrat Jimmy Naifeh will lose his position as House Speaker. He’s held that post since 1991. Last night, members of the House Republican leadership said they have spoken with all caucus members and expect them to vote for a republican. Controlling leadership positions can impact what types of legislation are passed since the party in power determines the makeup of committees.
Tennessee’s election results show a breakdown of the candidates county by county.
