Mother’s Day is always pretty easy for me. My mom is a huge reader and eats mostly plant-based. When she’s in town for Mother’s Day, I take her to Avo and then let her loose at Parnassus Books. My partner’s mom, meanwhile, is a triathlete, so I feel like I’d be pulling my more active stops out, like curling (which you can do by the way, at Tee Line in West).
WNXP’s Marquis Munson and I got to talking about this ahead of this week’s What Where When-sday and were so passionate about the fact that, while all moms are different individuals, some similarities in interests can exist. So, we recorded some recs. (But for the love of god, department stores, all moms are not wishing for pajamas this holiday.)
For the early riser…
How about braving the Kisser line? The brunch is incredible, and I promise it’s worth the wait. (Kisser is also Nashville’s sole finalist for a James Beard Award right now.)
Then, in the same complex, you can walk her on over to Holiday, the spa and bathhouse. Even if there isn’t availability right then, you can have her book a service or grab a gift card for the future.
For the mom who could use a drink…
Another option, for the beer drinkers, is right across the street in East — at Southern Grist Brewing Company. Their in-house restaurant, Lauter, is one of the most underrated brunch options we’ve got in the city, and their beer is hands down the most unique.
But hey, if your mom or partner is going to day drink, maybe she prefers wine. In that case, the scenic drive down to Arrington Vineyards is the move. My pro-tip is to swing by Trader Joe’s or Aldi the day before and load up on all her favorite snacks that pair well with frosé. There are food options on the premises too, but I usually cut over to Franklin for Bishop’s Meat and Three on my way back to Nashville.
For the art aficionado…
Why not head over to Nashville Glasshaüs in Berry Hill for some coffee and take it into the back studio to watch live glassblowing? If she likes what she sees, there are some affordable smaller sculptures and glasses for purchase. Or better yet, sign you both up for one of the glassblowing classes on an upcoming weekend. (Those start at $75 a person.)
After, I’d recommend nearby Little Gourmand, which has the smoothest quiche I’ve ever had, some of my favorite baguette sandwiches, and of course, perfect little macarons. My must there is always the earl grey and coconut flavors.
But ultimately, you know her best! These are just some ideas to help you show your appreciation to that special mom in your life.
