Today, Republican legislators across the state released the final section of their political agenda, as part of an election-year push to take the Tennessee House and increase their majority in the state Senate.
Called the “Tennessee Trust” plan, it focuses on stopping illegal immigration, limiting taxes and state spending, and promoting values.
The values portion of the agenda covers a variety of topics, ranging from healthcare to job development to same-sex marriage. It also includes education, which Nashville Representative Beth Harwell says is the top priority.
“We pledge that the priority for the budget will be education. We won’t wait until after the educational process takes place and then try to fund it, we will on the forefront prioritize education in the budget and every bill that comes before us that is a spending bill, we will ask ourselves, is this a priority over spending money in education. ”
Republican legislators also want to limit the number of bills the General Assembly can vote on every year. Lawmakers filed well over 4-thousand bills in the last two years.
