Judges selected the Supermajority podcast as a prestigious Peabody Award nominee, representing the best storytelling in broadcast and digital media in 2024. The special series from NPR’s Embedded is hosted by WPLN’s Meribah Knight.
The unanimous selection places Supermajority among 68 nominees, drawn out of more than 1,000 submissions. The Peabody Awards are based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Knight, in partnership with NPR’s Embedded, followed the story of three conservative mothers attempting to pass gun reform laws in the wake of the 2023 shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville. The series captures their political evolution and details the dynamics inside the Republican-dominated Tennessee General Assembly.
“This reporting immerses listeners into people’s lives, helping us understand survivors, advocates and lawmakers with nuance,” said Tony Gonzalez, news director at WPLN. “And Meribah captures the urgency of a moment with so much at stake.”
The series has also been recognized by the National Press Foundation.
Knight is senior reporter and producer of special projects at WPLN News, and is the host and creator of the Peabody Award-winning podcast The Promise (2020) and Serial’s The Kids of Rutherford County. She has received numerous national awards for her reporting, including the George Polk Award. Knight was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the Goldsmith Award, and twice a finalist for a National Magazine Award.
Peabody Award winners will be announced on May 1.
