Tenneseeans are among the fattest in the nation, but a study released today/yesterday shows most people in the state are trying to lose weight.
Research conducted last winter by the University of Tennessee’s Nutrition Institute shows the average body mass index for Tenneesseans is just over 29. A person is considered obese when they reach a B-M-I of 30. Institute Director Michael Zemel says the study also found that 7 out of 10 Tennesseans are trying to shed pounds, but many aren’t being successful.
“There’s a gap between knowing and doing. Our challenge is to decrease that gap and we decrease that gap by creating small changes in existing lifestyles.”
Zemel and Governor Phil Bredesen announced the study results from the headquarters of ComData, a payment management company in Brentwood. Bredesen highlighted the company today/yesterday for its efforts to help employees lose weight through an on-site gym, as well as a partnership with Weight Watchers.
