Nashville’s transit agency WeGo is working to reassure riders of their safety after a driver was stabbed and a man shot at a transit center.
CEO Steve Bland says the incidents were unrelated and that the agency will continue searching for ways to improve public safety.
WeGo periodically fields concerns about safety, including after incidents in 2018.
Bland told reporters Thursday that he’s regularly in talks about having a police unit dedicated to the transit system.
“Having worked in other transit agencies, including one that had … a transit police department, there is an effectiveness in that,” said Bland. “And that’s a conversation we have and will continue to have with Chief Drake.”
For now, Bland says the bus system is still be safe for the more than 30,000 daily riders. WeGo has multiple cameras on each bus, so that emergencies can be caught on camera. Bus drivers also have an emergency button they can hit to alert WeGo security.
