The Inflation Reduction Act makes renewables cheaper. But TVA is still pushing fossil fuels.

By Caroline Eggers

August 18, 2023

Listen

The Inflation Reduction Act has been called the most significant climate law in U.S. history, with promises to radically shift electricity from fossil fuels to clean sources.  In Tennessee, the legislation could shape a new wave of clean energy manufacturing, but it has been absent in the state’s electricity plans.

‘Further pollution is unacceptable’: Nashville leaders decry TVA Kingston project

By Caroline Eggers

July 7, 2023

The Tennessee Valley Authority is planning a gas plant and pipeline project in Kingston. Tennessee residents, over many years, will pay for it. But should they? The fossil fuel project is not a good investment, economically or morally, according to Nashville’s political leaders.

TVA proposes another methane gas plant, this time just outside Nashville

By Caroline Eggers

June 16, 2023

In the past year, the Tennessee Valley Authority has proposed nearly 4 gigawatts of new fossil fuel generation — or about 10% of the utility’s current electricity capacity. That includes plans to burn more gas on land right outside of Nashville.

Tennessee has 300 leaky, ‘orphaned’ oil and gas wells. A handful are about to be plugged for safety.

By Caroline Eggers

June 9, 2023

Abandoned gas wells — essentially deep holes in Earth’s crust that slowly spit out methane — will soon be capped in one of Tennessee’s federally-protected lands.  The U.S. Department of the Interior announced funding Thursday to plug orphaned oil and gas wells in national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands and waters.

Tennessee raises felony charge for ‘interfering’ with oil and gas pipeline projects

By Caroline Eggers

April 16, 2023

In the past four years, Tennessee has passed multiple laws aimed to protect fossil fuel projects from community challenges, like the law that preempts local governments from blocking fossil fuel projects, or the one that allows the state to boycott banks that divest from fossil fuels.

Tennessee deferred from EPA’s smog reduction plan

By Caroline Eggers

March 24, 2023

Smog has historically been the term for smoke and fog.  Today, the definition has a little more accountability. Smog is produced when sunlight mixes with pollution from the fossil fuel industry, cars and factories, and the technical term for it is ground-level ozone pollution.

Is natural gas ‘clean energy’? Tennessee lawmakers want you to think so.

By Caroline Eggers

March 15, 2023

Natural gas is “better than” coal. This refrain is a classic argument for the fossil fuel industry, and it is how Tennessee lawmakers are persuading the state legislature to rebrand natural gas as “clean energy.”
