The president of the NAACP Nashville is stepping down immediately. In a statement posted to Facebook overnight, Keith Caldwell says he is “both thankful and challenged” by his nearly two years in charge.

A peaceful “I Will Breathe” rally, which drew thousands of people at War Memorial Plaza, eventually turned destructive as the hours wore on Saturday. Pockets of protesters smashed cars and police used tear gas to disperse some who vandalized Nashville’s City Hall. Police say the area was mostly cleared by about 10:45 p.m.

Metro Police are investigating how a toy practice target came to be set up in the front yard of a civil rights leader in Nashville on Saturday night. The department has elevated the case to a potential act of intimidation.
NAACP Will Fight to Keep Affirmative Action
The NAACP says they will fight “tooth and nail” against legislators trying to restrict Tennessee affirmative action laws. The bill from Dickson Senator Jim Summerville would prohibit public universities from considering race, gender or ethnicity when admitting students.
