Unemployment Up in 59 Counties

The jobless rate rose last month in more than half of Tennessee’s counties. The statewide figure inched up from 8.1 to 8.4 percent in July. But according to the state department of Labor and Workforce, when the numbers are crunched on a more local level, they show unemployment rates of ten percent or more in 54 of the state’s 95 counties.

Fort Negley and the Hope of Freedom

Listen Now: Nashville’s Fort Negley was built for war, and construction began 150 years ago this month. Union officers considered the stone fortress a show of strength and military might. Instead, the fort’s enduring story belongs to the black laborers, both slave and free, who were forced to build it.

State Releases Priority Schools List

State education officials today released their list of the bottom five percent of Tennessee’s schools. The list is based on the last three years of test scores and graduation rates.

Sumner County Commission to Consider New Schools Budget Proposal Monday

It’s still not clear when school will begin in Sumner County, thanks to the ongoing fight over the district’s budget. The next move belongs to the County Commission, whose budget committee is scheduled to meet on Monday-a week after what should have been the start of the academic year.

Tennessee Air Some of Nation’s Worst-Polluted, But Future Looks Cleaner

Tennessee has once again been named to a list of states with the worst air pollution from power plants. The National Resources Defense Council puts Tennessee at number eleven on its so-called “Toxic Twenty” list. But the environmental group says there’s reason to be hopeful for the state of Tennessee’s air.

Settlement Hotline Offers Mortgage Help

Nutty Professor Producers Say Hamlisch Left Completed Score

The old adage “the show must go on” is particularly true this week for The Nutty Professor. Its composer, Marvin Hamlisch, died suddenly Tuesday. That means one less voice on the creative team that’s putting final touches on the musical in Nashville before trying to take it to Broadway.
