Waverly, in Humphreys County, was devastated on August 21, 2021, when floodwaters swept through the rural Tennessee town and killed 20 people.
WPLN News enterprise reporter Damon Mitchell has been reporting on the people of Waverly more than six months after the flood. He spoke to This Is Nashville host Khalil Ekulona on Monday about the rebuilding community.
“Some people have rebuilt their homes. … Some people are still trying to figure things out, and there are also places where it looks like nothing has changed,” said Mitchell.
Waverly resident and business owner Ted Rice also spoke about how many locals are angry at the slow pace of the town’s rebuild and cleanup.
“A lot of people are going through the steps of anger. They’ve gone back in their homes and are mad because things weren’t done,” said Rice. “The county executive has been yelled at and the city manager has taken a lot of heat from citizens.”
