Anna Gallegos-Cannon (she/her) is the newest member of WPLN News. As the station’s first-ever Digital Lead, Anna amplifies This Is Nashville on digital platforms. Get to know her.
1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an ice skater. It made absolutely no sense because I grew up in El Paso, Texas, where ice rinks aren’t common. I’m still trying to learn how to ice skate.
2. What made you want to work for WPLN News and This Is Nashville?
I’ve always wanted to work for an NPR station because my dad listened to it in the car when I was a kid. (Editor’s note: Yay for backseat listeners!) I joined This Is Nashville because I want to be a part of something that gives back and celebrates my new home.
3. What can listeners expect you to do at WPLN News in the next year?
I’ll be the person behind the scenes running the This Is Nashville Twitter, Instagram and Facebook group. I want listeners to know that they’ll be talking to a real person who wants to know what makes them excited about Middle Tennessee and help investigate whatever questions they have about Nashville.
4. a) Do you consider yourself to be a foodie? b) Any favorite Nashville restaurants so far? c) Any places on your “must try” list?
I don’t know if I’d call myself a foodie, but I do love cooking and trying new restaurants. My go-to restaurant is Sonobana on White Bridge. They have the best sushi in Nashville. I don’t have a must-try list, but I’m always looking for authentic tacos.
(Editor’s note: Tweet taco recommendations to Anna!)
5. What do you like to do for fun outside the office?
I’m usually reading novels or watching Dallas Stars games. My husband got me into video games during the pandemic so I’m searching for my next name after completing Ghost of Tsushima.
BONUS: Where else have you lived besides Middle Tennessee?
How much time do you have? Let’s see. In Texas, I’ve lived in El Paso, Houston, and Austin. I’ve also had addresses in Atlanta; Oakland, California; and Seattle. Nashville is now my forever home, though.
BONUS 2: What’s your go-to karaoke song? (Not that we’d ever make you sing it.)
I’ll admit that I’m a terrible singer. My voice makes puppies cry and glass crack. But if I had to pick a song, it’d be “Lovesong” by The Cure.
