Nashville’s English Learners Struggled With Virtual School. Here’s How Parents, Nonprofits And The District Have Rallied.

The virtual return to classrooms has been an adjustment for all students. But for English learners, there’s yet another barrier, and it’s a real impact on participation: In the first few weeks, EL students logged into online school 9% less than their peers, according to data from Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Metro Nashville Public Schools welcomed the last of the district’s students with disabilities to classrooms Wednesday morning. Nearly 700 kids are now back in school buildings ahead of fall break. They’re the first to return to physical classrooms since the pandemic closed buildings in March.

State Board Of Education Overturns Local Denials For Nashville Charters

The Tennessee State Board of Education voted to approve two Nashville charter schools Monday, overturning the local school board’s decision in July to deny new charters. The decision paves the way for Nashville Collegiate Prep to open in 2021 and KIPP Antioch College Prep High School to open in 2023.

Metro Schools Greenlights Contact Sports, Doesn’t Budge On Reopening High Schools

Metro Nashville Public Schools is changing its course on competitive sports events. It now says it will allow student-athletes to resume games next week — with girls soccer games beginning Sept. 23 and football starting Sept. 25. Contact practices began last week.

Tennessee State University Receives Grant To Boost STEM Access For Students Of Color

Tennessee State University is pushing to expand higher education access for students in Middle Tennessee’s community colleges. They’ve received a grant for $1 million from the National Science Foundation, to recruit students of color, who are interested in enrolling into math, science, technology and engineering programs.

Attendance Down Only Slightly After Nashville’s Pivot To Virtual Learning

There are small but significant differences in the number of students who’ve been showing up to Metro Nashville Public Schools compared to last year. Early data show the attendance rate is 5% less — and 2%, or 1,456 students, didn’t log into the district’s learning platform Schoology during the month of August at all.
