A new initiative follows the recent groundswell of protests against systemic racism in policing, but accusations of racial bias are not new in Tennessee’s court system.
Gov. Bill Lee’s criminal justice reform task force unveiled 23 policy recommendations Thursday afternoon. The suggestions range from expanding educational opportunities in prison to rewriting the state’s sentencing code. Now, it’s up to lawmakers to decide which proposals will make it onto the legislative agenda.
Inmates are entering Tennessee prisons faster than they’re being released, and the Correction Department says the unforeseen trend is busting the agency’s budget. The state prison system has asked for an extra $50 million to make it through this year.
