
The state tried and failed to execute Christa Pike on Wednesday night, raising questions about what went wrong and renewing concerns over the state’s execution protocols.
Since then, Governor Bill Lee has halted the state’s next scheduled execution and ordered an external review of how the execution failed.
Our reporters were at the prison when Pike received what was thought to be a lethal dose of a sedative, but kept breathing and, at times, moving or snoring. She was later taken to a medical facility. We’re now working to find out the latest with Pike, as well as the ramifications for capital punishment.
