WPLN’s special series Breaking Points by Ambriehl Crutchfield has won the National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence Award in the News: Series category.
This is the first NABJ Salute to Excellence Award that WPLN News has received.
“I’m so grateful that NABJ recognized the power of Black Nashvillians voices featured in Breaking Points,” Crutchfield said. “This series was a passion and healing project for me as the nation considered how systemic racism shapes our present. I’m looking forward to continuing to dissect this in my Metro coverage and in future projects.”
Cheryl Devall served as the primary editor on this series.
“Congratulations, Ambriehl, for proposing such a great idea, and to the news department for running with it in short feature and 30-minute special form,” Devall says.
WPLN News aired a 30-minute radio special of the series in November 2020.
“We are both proud of Ambriehl and grateful for the work she has done to elevate Black voices and other people of color on our air over the past year and a half,” says WPLN News Director Emily Siner.
Ambriehl started at WPLN News as Metro reporter in June 2020. She pitched Breaking Points to newsroom editors on her first day of the job.
