Khalil Ekulona is the newest member of WPLN News. He’s the station’s first-ever This Is Nashville host. Get to know him.
Khalil’s pronouns: he, him
1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I had my heart set on being a ninja until my dad told me that they do not make one hundred thousand dollars a year as I thought they did. After that dream was crushed, I had had my eyes set on being elected President of the United States. Then I decided I just wanted to be cool when I grew up. The jury is still out on that one.
2. What can listeners expect you to do at WPLN News in the next year?
I am the inaugural host of the soon-to-be-launched daily show This Is Nashville. We will be covering all things Nashville as we explore the character of this great city. It will be informative, exciting and entertaining.
3. a) Do you consider yourself to be a foodie? b) Any favorite Nashville restaurants so far? c) Any places on your “must try” list?
I love food. It keeps us alive. As an avid cook (I make chocolate chip cookies that you will dream about) I enjoy a delicious meal. I have yet to try hot chicken, so that is on my list. I want to find some of the hidden, hole-in-the-wall spots that have flavor and culture in each bite. I am open for anything except shellfish as I am allergic and that sucks considering I am from Maryland and grew up eating crabs.
4. What do you like to do for fun outside the office?
I enjoy making music, watching football, exercising, reading, and finding ways to be creative. Humor is a large part of my life and allows sanity to remain close to me.
5. Where else have you lived besides Middle Tennessee?
Oh wow. Plenty of places. I was born in New Jersey and grew up in Maryland. I went to college in North Carolina (go Elon Phoenix). I have lived in New York City, Los Angeles, a quick stint in Indiana and Phoenix, but most recently I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. If you have an opportunity to visit, I highly suggest that you do. Such a beautiful skyline.
